Am i missing a gear????
Hello everybody. After a question in this forum about buying a certain A6 I listened to the advices and turned the car down. So I ended up with an A4 2003 3.0 in very nice condition. ( and in this case a new timing belt, rollers and waterpump were INCLUDED in the purchase, as well new tires and rear brakes.)
I was HAPPY when the car returned with around 21MPGs for my way to work. ( mostly backroads). So today i took it on the highway to see the MPGs here.
I was SHOCKED about the result and wonder if the transmission does NOT go into the last gear maybe???? I got 23.8 MPGs for a 2 hour highway ride. Pretty even roads as well. I observed 2750 to 2800 RPMs while driving 75mph. ( my phone GPS claims it was actually 71mph). So............is something wrong here or is this as good as it gets? Thanks for any advice!!!

I assume you have an automatic? Anyway, I have a 5 speed manual and it turns about that many RPMs at 75, so assume the manual is geared similarly. Also, I get more like 28 MPG.

Your transmission should be TipTronic - have you tried manually selecting each gear and noting the revs associated with a given speed. Then put into D and see what RPM's you are showing for the same speeds.

I get ~26 when I cruise with other cars at highway speeds of 65-70. ~18 in the hilly city.
3.0 Tiptronic also. 185k total miles
2002 3.0 quattro tiptronic
185000k

Mythbusters tested tire pressures and found a 10% increase in PSI resulted in a 10% increase in MPG's.
In your case, that would translate to a couple more MPG's. It would make the ride a little harsher and some will say that it wears out the center of the tire but I have been running increased pressure for years and haven't noticed any unusual tire wear. It might have something to do with modern radial ply construction.
Give it a try and see what happens. You have the option to return to recommended pressures when ever you feel the need. Some brands of tires have a higher rolling resistance than others.
