Default 2003 A4 1.8T..Rough idle...engine light

Our A4 Quattro at 75k miles suddenly started idling very rough and the "Check Engine" light has come on. Timing belt was replaced at 60,000 mile and only one ignition coil has been replaced (at 20000 miles). There has been no loss of power so far.

Any ideas what this might be? Can the car be driven for a week or 2 until we get it in the shop?

Default one of your ignition coils have failed/is failing

should be ok to limp to a dealership to replace but you won't go too fast and hopefully the dealership is close by.

Default Have you popped the hood?

Last time I had a rough idle, I found a few coilpacks popped out a little bit. Retorqued my spark plugs and pushed the packs back in and within a few starts rough idle went away.

Default Do I hold the coil pack record? 14 of the damn things

when I first got the car with 10K on it the engine light came, rough running etc etc.

Audi roadside came out - 1 new coilpack.
within the week light returned, but running fine, Audi roadside changed all 6 (7)

engine light returned so Audi main dealer serviced and changed all 6 again (13).

they eventually found the real cause of the engine light so no more coilpacks until last month I limped home on just 5 cylinders and replaced one myself (14).

Then to add insult to injury the coilpack went on my wife's Renault!
