Default Will a Garrett gt37r or Holset hy35 turbo from a Cummins work on a 1.8t?

I STFA but only found a couple of examples and wanted to check with the pros here...

A friend from HS works for Cummins and is able to get his hands on blown turbos for free and rebuilt for next to nothing, so the wheels naturally began to turn and I wondered if I could make one work. Anyone have experience with them or know of anyone making one work?

TIA

Default GT37R only if you're planning on making well over 600WHP & rev to 9000...HY-35 would be nice...

Hy-35 would be a good turbo for up to 350 whp, with super fast spool. I run a HX35/40 hybrid on my car. I have a HY-35 at home but never gave it a try...

Plan on spending several thousand dollars to get it to work though...

You'll need an exhaust manifold (SPA for ~ $500 or Full-Race for around $1300) The Holset turbo's are longer than Garrett's and don't fit on the log manifolds well, you'd have no room for an intake.

You'll also need a custom downpipe made for the turbo.

I won't even get into the tuning but you'll need a custom tune on either standalone or find someone to tune the stock ECU, along with fuel system upgrades, internals if you want it to be reliable, etc.

Default Looks like I should have him keep an eye out for a smaller garrett or holset to turn up...

I was hoping to keep part swapping to a minimum. Right now everything is stock (K03 and no chip) but I am looking to chip it, but I wanted to wait until after researching about these big boys so I could get the right tune.

Default HY-35 is about the smallest holset you can get...

Any aftermarket turbo will require everything I mentioned above, except for a K04.

With what everything else will cost you to do this right, i wouldn't even be thinking about trying to get a cheap turbo, that's the least of your concerns.

Default Those 2 turbo's are worlds apart. What power are you looking to make?....

The HTA30r is a nice option and upgrade (anti-surge housing) to the standard 30r. YOu also have Bullseye (journal bearing, all compressors are anti-surge and only Turbo I know of with a 2 year warranty)

Default Those are the two that he deals with most often. I am not looking to do anything too radical...

just wanted a nice upgrade, and I thought if I could get my hands on one of them for cheap, I'd do it, but I didn't realize that it couldn't be done without so much other work. I just now am starting to get it really running right so I wanted to explore my options before chipping.

Default Anything other than a PES or APR kit.....

will have a plethora of unforseen aspects as well as custom fabrications. Even the Elim kits at this point are not a direct drop in go kind of kit. Good luck, anymore questions just ask and you'll get some responses (I don't care if it's been covered and you can search for it - this takes more time than just posting it up and getting answers sometimes) I won't tell you to STFA or use search I'll just answer with as much info as I can
