trade in value?

trade in value?
I visited an Audi dealer today to look at the new A4 1.8T. I planned on trading in my 1997 A4 1.8TQMT with 83,000(no leather). The salesman offered me $5,000. This seems a little low and doesn't match the KBB or NADA value? Anyone else have this experience?

Ouch.. that's probably his way of saying. He doesn't want to buy your car.
I've always been lowballed by dealers anyways on trade in's. I ask just to see, but I never trade it in. I would sell it privately. You'll definetly get more than 5k I would imagine.

Way low. You must name your price and stick to it. Or...
Sell it yourself and get a lot more.
Dealers will often super lowball a trade-in. So, say your car is worth $9,000.00 on the open market. Dealer may offer you $5 or $6k. then turn around and mark it up to $9,000.00. That's where they make a lot of $$$.

Actually thats how it goes....
Never mention that u've got a trade-in b4 u agree on the price of the vehicle u wanna buy.
Then let them know u might trade something in.
The KBB, NADA & Edmund's is a crap while trading in. They will rip u off left and right. KBB somewhat works if u selling to private party but definately not if dealing w/dealerships. You would give them ur Audi for say $5k, they would turn around and sell it for $10K after 15minutes negotiating with the buyer. I guaranDAMNtee u u'll be better off by selling the car for $8-9k on your own plus you will make somebody else very happy. You can sell it fast, trust me - try autotrader.com
Nowadays only banks look @ KBB values etc

Actually, found Edmund's to be pretty close recently.
Dealer offered about $1K less than a reasonable trade-in value, I got $500 back easily but wound up selling my A4 to the spouse of a co-worker.
