Tow ropes are useful in the snow
Last snow storm I was driving in Wellesley MA and some guy had put his Accord deep into a snow bank while pulling into his driveway on a main road (was perpendicular and sticking way out in the 2 lane road). I pulled over to ask if he needed help (which he obviously did).
I pulled up on the side of the road with hazards on and jumped out to see what we could do. While we were standing looking at his car, TWO!!! cops drove by and didn't even stop.
The snowbank was mostly ice and his plastic shovels were no match for it. He had already tried PUSHING the car out with his Jeep and managed to put a huge dent into the front fender of the car due to the angle he was pushing.
I hooked up the tow rope to our cars and easily pulled him out of the bank. This guy was sure to get hit by a passing car. I am still shocked that the police didn't stop.
Tow ropes are great and cost under $20 at the zone.

only if you know what you're doing.
and, the cops probably saw that everyone was ok and there was probably other accidents or issues where the people weren't ok. plus, the fact that 2 went by probably meant they were on their way to something more serious than a car in a snow bank with 2 guys fumbling around with tow ropes. maybe they saw your Quattro badge and knew you'd get him out

I got allowed to pull my buddy back on the road out of brush with my truck...
But I'm pretty sure it was because the trooper wanted to watch it in action, nothing but oohh and ahhh over the truck.

Did same thing last night. 100's of people in stopped traffic not helping, pulled some guy out as I
was sitting there waiting in traffic! Crossfire w/ summer performance tires FTL, he didn't look very confident when I told him I could yank him right out, then tried to pay me once I had. Silly people w/ there rear-wheel drive cars, although the 9 inches of snow surprised us all here in da nasty nati.

I tell the kids to carry one, not so they can resuce someone but so they can be rescued.
plastic shovels, lol. I usually have a Army trench shovel stored, but we also have a nice aluminum Sweedish Snow Rescue shovel for the truck.
