Default timming belt question

hey guys Iam getting ready to do a timming belt on my 96 a4 with a 2.8. I heard that I have to remove the cam gears is this true? If so why?

Yes it is true. You lock the cams in position, which locks the timing in place. You pop the timing gears which allows you to get the belt on and everything lined up perfectly. There is an 90 v6 timing belt write-up in tech that is very good.
