Timing belt, etc. A question.
I am now approaching 60K with my 99.5 1.8T Avant. I am planning on a timing belt change soon, and I am beginning to order the parts. The tensioner, roller, and belts are all on the must-replace list. A snub mount and a BPV are easy, since everything is exposed. I figured on changing the water pump and the thermostat, the coolant and perhaps the hoses as well, but since my water pump was replaced by the dealer at 48K (I think with new coolant), should I change it again? The pump is working fine, and not showing the kind of noise and coolant losses that led to its replacement.

you have to drain your coolant anyway
to do the timing belt, but I would save yourself the hassle and not do the waterpump again. You have to remove the alternator and power steering pump bracket to get to the water pump.
Just do the timing belt, and drive belts (including AC)

Re: Timing belt, etc. A question.
Unless you are taking out the water pump or removing some coolant hoses, you certainly don't need to remove the coolant to do the timing belt. The whole front end with the bumper and rad slides out leaving the radiator and all the hoses intact. This gives you about another 3 inches up front to work with. It's really quite nice to work on when you set it up right. Get the Bently repair manual before you begin to make sure you've done it right. Also, get your timing belt and tensioners from Audi as a kit. It is reasonably priced. The belts are well priced come to think of it.
