Default Thinking of trading the A4 for a GTI.....good idea?

possibly plan to trade a 2000 a4 1.8T with 59k on the clock and 1 year left of AA (few rock chips on the hood/FB on scratch on the door as far as condition) for a GTI. I know I can always respray the bumper for 200 if it would really make a difference in resale value along with touching up the rock chips, but in general what do you think of the idea?

Which year/model and engine should I look for that would be in my range (with 1k or less spent including the trade in. A stick shift and leather seats are really the only options I care about (my A4 is sadly an autobox)

Or would I be better off just keeping the Audi?

Default Depends on what you want.. Even with leather, a GTI is not as nice of a car as an A4..

My brother has one, it's fun as heck to drive, but it's no Audi.

If you want a fun small canyon carver, get the GTI 1.8t, in a 5 speed...

If you want a nice sporty car, stick with your A4.

Default One question since your brother owns one, has it been reliable?

I can't find solid information on how they hold up

Default Re: Thinking of trading the A4 for a GTI.....good idea?

Funny you should mention that. I'm trading my 2001 GTI GLX (VR6) for a 2001 A4 1.8T Tip. The dealer just opened their new tuning dept. and are delivering it chipped with a new diverter valve.

GTI likes:
Torque, huge cargo area, GLX has great features i.e. rain sensor wipers, steering wheel controls. Handles very well despite excessive body roll.
GTI dislikes:
Not much damping/travel on front suspension - be prepared to SLAM over expansion joints, etc. Sit higher than in the A4. FWD just can't hook up if you've got torque (i.e. a VW or Audi). No independent rear suspension - lots of body roll. Everybody's got one.

I'm moving into a more laid back environment in the A4. Hopefully, thanks to GIAC, I won't be sacrificing straight line performance.

My Mom had a 2001 A4 and, in back to back comparisons, it was nicer to drive all round. It did not, however, have the grit of my GTI.
