Default Temp sensor or G28?

The vehicle in question is a 2001 A4 1.8TQM; I'll try to make this as quick as possible...

So about a month ago, I started to get some detonation around ~13lbs. @ WOT. Because of this, I've just been taking it easy, staying away from too much boost. However, the past couple of days, it has been extremely difficult to start when cold. Once warm, the car starts fine. In addition, the detonation would only happen after the car is warm.
So...
COLD: Hard, hard start; once running, no detonation @ WOT
WARM: Detonation at WOT; starts fine.

CODES: Random Misfire
Misfire cyl. 3
Catalyst efficiency below threshold

Bentley says it's the G28 engine speed sensor, however, I was under the impression that the car will not even start if this sensor is malfunctioning. My only other guess would be the coolant temp sensor. What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance everyone.
