speedometer failed tonight, is there ever a case where it's not the speed sensor ?

had this happen once before and it was the sensor, but I am curious to see if it could be anything else?

thoughts ?

Usually only thing is the speed sensor on the trans.

Does it generally fail instantly or over time?

My needle bounces +/-5mph at speed now, trying to figure out the problem.
