Default Sludge buildup repair kit - $2,884

That was the estimate for my 2001 A4 1.8 from the dealer. They also recommended I replace the timing belt for around $1,600. Seems awfully expensive. What are my options at this point? I screwed up by not taking care of my car, but any more cost-effective solutions?

The most obvious advice I can give you, is to tell the dealer to **** off and go find a reliable local mechanic. I avoid the dealership like a plague - support your local shops.

Okay, I don't mind going to local shops, but what's the range I should be considering? I've never heard of this problem, so don't know what is considered a reasonable price to pay. Thanks

Solution - go to another dealer or independent shop. I'm guessing this "repair kit" is a new head and well everything else to go along with it. And the cost of a timing belt should be in the $800 range.

Honestly, if you've sludged the engine and it's locked up, cut your loses. Find another car and move on.

You could probably get a used motor and timing belt installed for around half that at an independent .

You could maybe sell it on craigslist for about $1500 as is.
