Default Rear spring cracked

My rear passenger side spring cracked when I went over a speed bump. When taking it in to get a price quote they told me I need to have both struts replaced in the rear. They said it would cost 935$. Is it completely necessary to have this done or can I just have the spring replaced?

Only if they are worn out. Anything over 80K miles and they could be shot.

They are considered shocks not struts.

Pretty common problem if your car is subjected to salty roads.

Salty roads here (Minnesota) and I've had to replace both back springs on my 96 B5 with 270,000 miles. Rear shocks are still origninal, and they're just fine.

When I replaced mine, I had to get the springs from audi, but saved some money by going with Sachs shocks. Also, if you can get your hands on a spring compressor, are patient, and careful, you might be able to tackle this yourself. Another possibility- you might be able to find the coil/spring as a unit. Then it is a straight forward swap.

Finally, I think Audi recommends replacing the case-hardened bolts when changing things up...Be sure to check if you go the DIY route.

Edwardo, neither you nor I know how his shocks are working, so we take his word for it that they work fine.
