I actually went though a mess with this a year ago and it was a nightmare. VW wanted $700 for my module ( apparently it was only used for one year of passat w8's with manual trans, and audi S6's.) I finally found one used and took it to my local indy mechanic to have it programmed. Here are some pointers I found along the way:

1.) if you have a bosch 5.7 module its unlikely that they will be able to repair it, but there is one place i think its cheapabs.com or something like that, that will return your module and refund you if they can't fix it.

2.) before you pull the abs module from the car have some one pull the codes and programming info from the car, I don't know how to do this my mechanic did it. If you don't get the codes before pulling the module its a pain in the rear to get it programmed ( I know because I made the mistake.) Also you need a real Vag-Com for this the free version will not work at all. Only the full paid edition will cut it.

3.) If the module is expensive new, buy used. Find a good junk yard or go on ebay if the unit is good it will generally stay good for quite a while, mine is from an audi that got smashed in CA, and has worked great for over a year *knock on wood.*

What the heck I will post in a seven year old dredge up from the past. Everyone else is.

Multiple Audis with the ABS failure. Always just picked up one from a wrecker. So far so good.

a few years ago all the codes said mine had gone. Replaced it but that did not fix the problem. There was a short in the wiring where it goes under the driver seat. Near as i can tell some dealer work from years earlier, that they did with out telling me, lead to the short happening.
