it sounds like you have alot of carbon buildup on the valves, it is common for 1.8t and 2.8 engines to not start when it is cold out due to carbon...try running a can or 2 of bg44k through it...that would explain the excessive cranking and the rough idle till it warms up

I was having similar symptoms and check valve was broke in half. Seems when it is cold the hoses contract, when its warmer they expanded allowing the car to run as normal(thus your problems at colder temps). Follow audiTLC's easy to do it yourself instructions and you should be back on the road in no time.
