Default OT: Overheat light on 2.0L VW Beetle- anyone familiar?

Guys,
my wife's 01 Beetle 2.0 has an intermittent flashing red temp light. It happens after she is driving a while, never at startup.

It happens after she has been on the freeway speeds awhile and then stops at a light... today she noticed it happened on the morning commute around 30-40mph. Then, when she got up to 60ish, the light disappeared.

already changed the coolant temp sensor.
no loss of coolant
no loss of oil
any other ideas? searched vwvortex but they seem tech slim on the beetle.

thanks

Default I had that happen on my wife's beetle and it was the coolant temp sensor

not sure what else it could be. Try hooking up the vag and logging coolant temps as you drive, see what it looks like.

Default Water pump goes kerblewie pretty often.

it is the plastic impeller water pump that fails on many Audi/VW engines. It will get worse.. you can sit at idle all day and not get hot, but under load in overheats.

Default The temp guage doesn't show an overheat? Just the light?

If that is the case, probably not a water pump.

Default there is no temp gauge.just a flashing red temp light. btw, no CEL's go off w/ the flashing red...

If i want to find out actual temps, i'll have to hook up my SG or a VGCM unfortunately.

It's a beetle. Gauges confuse people who drive beetles

Default Here's how you check....

Look at the coolant bottle with the engine at idle, and check out the little hose at the top where coolant is returned to the bottle. Make sure coolant is flowing out of that hose. If it is at idle, have someone sit in the car and increase the engine speed, and recheck the hose. If its not flowing coolant, the plastic water pump impeller has cracked or sheared off the water pump shaft and is no longer pumping coolant effectively.

The WP is $59.93 with a $50 core charge from audipartsdepot.com with the AW discount applied...

Default can you see it flow or feel for a hot hose to indicate flow? or wait till it's cold and

then open the cap and visually check to see if it's flowing?

found this pic- looks the same- is it the small hose at the top right?

Default

Should be able to look right through the bottle, or yes, you can open the cap and check for flow.
