OT: Overheat light on 2.0L VW Beetle- anyone familiar?
Guys,
my wife's 01 Beetle 2.0 has an intermittent flashing red temp light. It happens after she is driving a while, never at startup.
It happens after she has been on the freeway speeds awhile and then stops at a light... today she noticed it happened on the morning commute around 30-40mph. Then, when she got up to 60ish, the light disappeared.
already changed the coolant temp sensor.
no loss of coolant
no loss of oil
any other ideas? searched vwvortex but they seem tech slim on the beetle.
thanks

I had that happen on my wife's beetle and it was the coolant temp sensor
not sure what else it could be. Try hooking up the vag and logging coolant temps as you drive, see what it looks like.

there is no temp gauge.just a flashing red temp light. btw, no CEL's go off w/ the flashing red...
If i want to find out actual temps, i'll have to hook up my SG or a VGCM unfortunately.

Here's how you check....
Look at the coolant bottle with the engine at idle, and check out the little hose at the top where coolant is returned to the bottle. Make sure coolant is flowing out of that hose. If it is at idle, have someone sit in the car and increase the engine speed, and recheck the hose. If its not flowing coolant, the plastic water pump impeller has cracked or sheared off the water pump shaft and is no longer pumping coolant effectively.

can you see it flow or feel for a hot hose to indicate flow? or wait till it's cold and
then open the cap and visually check to see if it's flowing?
found this pic- looks the same- is it the small hose at the top right?
