Oil change - 2000 A4 Quattro - which oil to use?
Instead of going to the dealer, I am thinking of using a local shop who works with Audis for regular oil change/service. I need to buy the oil and filter. Which oil do I use? I assume I can get it at AutoParts or similar auto shop? I have 2000 Audi A4 Quattro.
Thanks!

zero problems running Shell Rotella T full syn (blue bottle) for last 2 years on my 2 V6's YMMV...
But I'm just finishing up a test run with Valvoline's extreme blue full syn 5W40 and have had less oil loss than the Rottela or so it appears comparing my Avant with the Sedan both changed on same day but not an apples:apples comparison. Not that I have much oil loss with the Rottella at all. Just I noticed more oil loss, not from leaks mind you, with the M1 TDT forumla that I used off and on FWIW compared to the Rotella... and of course YMMV...

Depends on how cold it gets where you are, but a Hi-Miles 5w-30 like MaxLife or GTX HM works great.
If you burn oil or are in very hot temps, a HM 10w-40 would be a lil better. Synth oil is a skip in V6 unless you see extended sub zero.
If you want to go a lil farther maintenance-wise, get a bottle of Auto-Rx(.com) and add it to plain dino oil (Havoline or Pennzoil). This is rather than a HM oil because Auto-Rx is basiclythe same type of ester additive that will clean and rejuvenate seals.
If you have any further questions just ask.
fwiw, I like time-based oil change intervals, like 2-3-4 times a year. Twice a year works great for most people out to 15k miles a year.

btw- Mobil 1 5w-30 failed to meet Valvoline's Sequence IVA wear testing to vaildate Mobil's specs
According to a letter Valvoline marketers received, the result from Valvoline's testing indicate:
* Valvoline SynPower's 5W-30 wear performance is at least four times better than Mobil 1 5W-30
* Mobil 1 5W-30 does not meet minimum API SM or ILSAC GF-4 specification because of its inferior performance in the Sequence IVA wear test
The letter reportedly goes on to say that Valvoline notified ExxonMobil of the failed test results in September and that the company take appropriate action regarding their claim that Mobil 1 meets ILSAC GF-4 and API SM specifications, or provide substantiation that they in fact meet these specifications.
As of today, Valvoline told JobbersWorld, ExxonMobil has been silent.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1309815& ;fpart=1</a
