Default New Audi owner with trans troubles

I just bought a 1997 A4 non-tip 1.8T Quattro. The seller said the she thinks the car needs a new transmission because it will not shift into reverse and the gears will not select on the dash (they are all light ). After doing a little research I think the problem may be the multifuntion switch, since the symptoms point to that. It seems like the trans is in limp mode and I am getting to codes run at a friends house tomorrow who has a vag-com setup.

I've noticed another problem though, over about 20mph or so I hear this loud noise coming from the back half of the car. It is almost unbearable at 60 mph, I'm hoping the multifunction switch will fix this somewhat because the car tachs at 3k at 60mph sincethe trans will not shift into 5th/overdrive. My first thought was that the exhaust had a hole in it, it's that sort of loud buzzing sound. It rises with speed but not with rpm, I can put the trans in neutral and the sound does not change. The weird part about it is when I make a left turn the noise completely goes away, right turns have no effect on the sound/vibration. It almost seems like something could be rubbing under the car because it will go away when I hit bumps sometimes. I have a bad feeling it may be the trans or rear diff. I don't think it's an axle, but it could be the rear drive shaft. The noise/vibration sounds almost like something winding up and it stays constant when the rpm drops when the car shifts.

I have never owned an all-wheel drive car nor have I ever owned an automatic car before, just wondering if anyone has had a problem like this. I bought the car expecting to put sometime and money into it, but i don't want to just buy the multifunction switch if I really do need to buy a trans.

Default MFS has failed, see my writeup. The noise is most likely a wheel bearing, a common failure.
