Default My car (98' A4 2.8 manual) shuddering at low speeds! Need Help!

A few days ago I drove my Audi across the country and after about 18 hours of straight driving, the engine started shuddering at low speeds and at idle. I let the car rest for a few hours and then continued my trip. The car engine still shudders and occasionally I can smell burnt rubber coming from the engine. I've looked at the engine and everything seems to be just fine (belts, hoses, etc.)

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before and might know what the problem is?

Default do you get the check engine light at all? If not, I'd have someone inspect the timing belt..

it could be a failing bearing in the waterpump, or one of the pulleys that the belt rolls over. It's not worth it to not check it out. Chances are you are due for a change anyway.

Actually, Yes. The chech enging light came on 2 days ago, then went away after not driving it for a little while.

Hmm. I'd get the codes read, and see what it's complaining about. Possibly misfires.

Default Spark plug wires, or something to that effect

Not sure about your burning rubber smell... but if it smooths out at higher RPMs it will be something related to your ignition delivery.

Default just had a mechanic look at it

I just had the car looked at by a mechanic. He said that the 4th cylinder was misfiring, so the car needs a tuneup with new plugs and wires for about $230. He said that the burning smell was the clutch, which needs to be replaced right away. He said the clutch would cost $900, which really sucks!

I'm wondering if that sounds like the right price and everything, or if I should seek another mechanic to fix it.

Is the clutch slipping? if not, it's fine.
