You can have a '01 A4 with 20k miles running like **** or one with 100k miles in great shape...
it is all relative to how the previous owners took care of the vehicle. 40k miles on a car is nothing now a days. Enlighten us with more information. Is the car certified?? Who owned it? Has regular\preventative maintenance been performed? What's the overall condition on the vehicle? How much are they asking?

That is pretty low mileage, IMO, and
as GoldRinger mentioned, mileage is not everything. It all depends on how the previous owner took care of it. If he was only doing the minimum, like the 10K mile oil changes with dealer-provided mineral oil, then the engine may already be sludged up, but then again, there's that extended warranty thing to take care of it. Just make sure the car has all the service records.

My '01.5 has 57k miles on it
Synth since 10k miles, APR chipped since 50k, runs like a charm. Like others have said, it's not necessarily the mileage, it's how the car was treated. Some owners here have upwards of 100k miles on their '01s. Chances are, it's in good condition, but there are no guarantees (just extended warranties).
