I'm not for sure but the yellow for the 3 seconds may be that it's service interval is needed. Could be low on a fluid too. You'll have to reference the manual, but you can do a systems check where the car will look at certain sensors. It displays them on the dash screen.
I had a lot of trouble with my 96 with the cruise control. There is a module and depending on the year vacuum control switches/actuators on the pedals. Maybe that's why your door locks aren't working either.

Are you getting any wording or symbols at all on the screen? The yellow screen for 3 seconds is usually the OK symbol when you first start your car up. If you are not getting any symbols or writing, it will be impossible to tell with your LCD non functional as shown above. Lettering is seen when the control unit allows light through the LCD by de-energizing those sets of pixels. In your case above, the LCD is not getting any power at all. In other words when the LCD is energized, it has black pixels that populate the screen letting no light through. With no energy going to the LCD, no pixels are blocking the back lighting which is why you are seeing the back lighting at full force. You can try to replace the screen but that doesn't necessarily mean that will fix the problem. Power to the LCD may be the problem.
For now if you don't like the lighting, push the button located under the wiper stalk to turn the back lighting off until you decide to get it fixed or just leave it off. I did for the first 2 years of owning my car until I decided to tackle the LCD retrofit. I'm glad I did as it's nice to have fully functional LCD with no dead pixels. Good luck.

Someone off eBay who no longer sells. I got it for around $38 shipped. Here is the original auction. This is a Chinese screen with a layer of the darkest tint I could find on the back side. Still up and running flawlessly for over 2 years.

Yeah it's the LCD screen. It dead! If I look at it from a different angle I can see like two pixels. So I'm just waiting to get it replaced. Are there any other year audis that would have an interchangeable cluster?

The yellow at the top is probably the dash attempting to notify you. Usually nothing serious but common warning lights could be washer fluid, a bulb out, or your brake pad wear indicator.
As others have said there are people who can repair it for you and get it back to working order.
