How reliable is the Manual Tranny? Noobie driving with mistakes.
Hi. i bought a used car, and i was wondering how reliable the manual transmission is.
i am new to stick shift, so i have been trouble getting to drive the car smoothly. i have stalled countless times and have had really rough shifts (bucking) making the car shake like crazy.
i have also had my fair share of grinding :/
i have gotten better, but i still occasionally make mistakes, like letting go of the clutch too quickly making the car buck forward and backward like crazy.
so i ask the question. how worried should i be about the life of my tranny and engine? am i destroying it? or is the image of honda being "unbreakable" really true?
should i be worried as a noob learning on my own car?

Grinding is no good. Jerky clutch engagement not as big a deal.
How are you grinding the gears? Simple, make sure it is in gear before you let the clutch out. ONLY issues nOOb (to manual) should have is bad clutch engagement.

Well first off, this car isn't a Honda. It's an Audi, so get that straight
Secondly, you are grinding the syncro(s) into their death and chipping gears is also a concern.
However, the biggest problem you are going to cause is destroying your clutch. Not that big of a deal, wearing it faster while you learn is normal.
Good luck, don't get discouraged!

Interesting, you say destroying clutch is biggest problem? Clutch seems like smallest concern out of
aforementioned concerns. Isn't destroying synchros and tranny the worst? Obviously no one wants to destroy their clutch, but I'll take that over tranny!

Yeah, that could make sense. I was assuming worst issue in HIS case. Having mentioned grinding gears
I figured that'd be addressed accordingly. Not that nate didnt address it, just that he said "biggest concern" is clutch. Most common issue might be substituted...
Either way now he knows, grinding is bad, umm kay...

Honda? Are you asking about a Honda or an Audi?
If it's a Honda, don't worry, they ARE just about unbreakable. Audis are very tough too, but when you DO break it, it'll cost about as much as a Honda to fix.
The worst thing about learning to drive a manual when it's an Audi with quattro, the transmission and clutch take it hardest. With a FWD, if you're too rough, you'll just spin the tires.. Not possible with a quattro. So the axles and diffs and transmission and clutch get a little more work till you figure it all out.
