the trick would be to negotiate a price while letting them think you're going to
finance the deal. (dealers make a signifiant amount of $$ on financing deals). Then at the last minute pay with cash...."Oh, my gf's mom just wired us this money!"

bingo! Jesus, your good =)
yeah.. could do it for the cost of parts from Axis.. negotiate and easy $500 off the cost of the car.
What do you think in general? Would love to get the gf into a solid Audi for the winter season.

Drive and listen for wheel bearings ,also insist on Carfax and/or other search for history
See if the local Audi dealer can run a Vin # for repair history .

What do I think... B5 FTMFW... but seriously...
Great car obviously, and because you being who you are I would reccomend that car any day to you, you can deal with the little quirks, and you know the commen problems, so it's a no brainer to me. And the '01 is a great car through and through personally.
That being said, all the normal issues be prepared for, and find out if the dealer got it on trade or an auction or something, if it's previous life was VT, be prepared for the ensueing swearing and broken knuckles due to rust while working on it, and a well worn suspension , but a quick call to the Axis god would help keep the cost down...
Drive it and visually inspect the shocks for any leaking, and use ANYTHING you find on the car to bring the price down, The L hose even!
...other than that enjoi it, it would be a cute couple in the driveway
