Default the bolt that holds the clamp around the filter was rusted to $hit so

i had to cut the bolt in half to get the old one out. dropping the tank wasn't too bad. just not much room to work in there.

I just had a similar wake up call. Audi put on a lovely bracket with a bolt in it that I think is 7mm 12 point with a brass nut. Fast forward 10 years and Im dropping the tank and trying five different tools to get a grip on the nut. Finally gave up and used a hacksaw blade to remove/cut the bolt. The nice thing is that the bracket has the lip which retains the filter really well. A good zip tie is all you need to fasten it again.

Oh and it took me 2 hrs. Just because it was my first and I didn't want to damage the bolt. Next time the whole job will take 1/2 hr. Including setting the hoist. lol

Did you happen to take pictures while you were doing this? I have to do mine to and based on what I am hearing I am going to arrange to borrow a Dremel.

You don't need pictures. I'l explain it.

1- jack up and block the right side of the car. Both front and back would make it alot easier cause you have to work underneath at odd angles

2- Located the fuel filter under right rear of door(four door). There is a Black plastic sleeve that retains the filter and hoses to and from.

3- Taking a good hacksaw blade only, cut through the bolt that retains it to the body. This is the PITA. If you can't get to it you will have to undo the fuel tank straps and drop it a bit. I had all of them out and the tank just sits on other chassis components

5- Spread the plastic sleeve and tug the filter down so you have access to all the hoses.

6- Using two vise grips wrapped with electrical tape or the proper pinch off pliers stop the flow of fuel to and from the filter

7- Undo the hose clamps with a pair of side cutters or pliers. If the filter has been changed in the past the clamps will probably be the normal worm gear type. If not see above pliers

8- When re-installing the filter use a good quality zip tie through the bolt hole. Never use white zip ties as most of them are not UV resistant and will breakdown over time.

A hell use the white ones, chances are they'll break down around the same time as you need a filter change anyways
