Dealer said my turbo is on its way out. Can I upgrade and not modify?

You can judge turbo wear by shaft movement (play). I would HIGHLY recommend replacing BEFORE it explodes and shoots little pieces of metal into your intake. Preventative maintenance is ALWAYS cheaper the corrective!!

Meh..shaft play can still mean 30K usable miles out a turbo. That could be up to 2 years
depending on mileage driven. My experience is that the exhaust turbine breaks first. And any compressor side parts would get stopped by the intercooler anyway.
