Crazy ?: Anyone running stock w/chipped only? You know, before you went all-out...
I was wondering if it's worth just flashing the ECU and that's it. Has anyone done this or is running this currently? I'm talking just the flash without exhaust/airbox/FMIC/K04/injectors/testpipe/MBC/nitrous/muffins/etc. If so, how much does the flash (let's use the linear APR or the harder-hitting GIAC) leave to be desired? Does it pull MUCH harder than stock? Also, did anyone expierence any repercussive failures due to the higher boost? I'm just trying to decide if it's worth it to save for a flash/bigger turbo upgrade instead, which would most likely require an exhaust as well. Getting the ECU flashed for $500 (without shipping) and not being able to drive my car for a few days would really blow if I put the ECU back in, fired the car up, and ended up saying, "Uhh...is this it?".

Night and day, even for an '01. Absolute best bang-for-the-buck power mod for the 1.8t.
Although you need stage 3 muffins to really take full advantage of the powah!
Also, try finding someone selling their entire chipped ECU... that way you will have no downtime.

Incredible, I've driven stock since and it is laughable...one problem though...
All you want in the end is more power....a horrible disease.. I only lasted about 1.5 years with chip/exhaust/fmic befor going BT.

Stg. 3 muffins are on order!
It definitely sounds worth it, and TBH, these were the replies I was hoping for =) That's a super good suggestion re: looking for a used ECU, which I've actually done but it's SO freakin' hard to find a 2001. Everyone seems to have previous models, but never the '01. Oh how I'd love to just switch the ECUs and be done in 20 minutes! Oh, the other question: Did things start failing after the flash?

the only other thing that is really of concern is the diverter valve
you can pick up something from the factory, like the 710N, and be fine... or go with one of the aftermarket ones. Doesn't really matter, even stock is generally okay, but you don't want to be tracking down boost leaks forever.

that's longer than I made it... bought my A4 chipped, within 4 months had K04
a couple months later and it was PC-16'd...
9 months after that and I moved onto the S...
had this thing a year and I'm ready for more power

you won't. you'll need to get under the car and remove the belly pan. You'll also need to get some
reusable hose clamps. Prying the factory ones off is not too fun.
Definitely a DIY though.
