charcoal cannister

charcoal cannister
Has anyone figured out what actually gets "clogged" inside the cannister that causes the problems with gas pump nozzles? After putting up with this problem for years, I read a post that details some trouble shooting. I disconnected the large line on the passengers side of the cannister and went to the gas station. I was able to fill the tank with no problems at all. With the line connected, it takes me a long time to fill the tank due to multiple shut off's at the pump nozzle. The cannister is just a plastic container with charcoal inside to absorb fumes. If you overfilled the tank and got liquid gasoline inside the cannister, does this actually destroy the charcoal and plug the lines? I haven't priced a new cannister, but I assume its expensive.
