Default Central Locking Pump replacment - '97, '98?

Getting the central locking pump fault code, noticing that the locking/unlocking doesnt work as well / consistently as it should.

saw the tech article here:
https://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec.html

Here's the issue, I've got a '97 a4 with only one remote. (not switchblade, but separate key/remote)

I'm worried if I replace this existing pump with 8L0 862 257 N, I won't be able to reprogram the remote for the car.

Is there a different pump for the '97-98 a4s? we have the push button unlock for the trunk and no separate trunk unlock button.

I don't want to buy a used pump from a '97 model, since they'll be just as old as the one I have, and not guaranteed to work for any length of time.

does anyone have any experience and/or opinions/advice they can give me on this problem? Will I need to have a new cut key or remote? this problem could end up costing me 500-600 bucks in new keys along with the superexpensive pump...

(btw, found that new for $350... good price?)

Thanks!

Allan

WJM:

your article was great... thank you!!

you stated in it though that the part number listed (8L0 862 257 N) is for 99-01 a4s only.

the 99-01 part seems to be the easiest to find in the various parts stores I usually deal with, so I'm trying to figure out if the 99-01 part will require me to buy new keys...

but you think that it should be the same?

This thread states that for 97's it should be 8L0 862 257 B, but I can't find this part anywhere online.

Default They're the same, look for my post asking the same question.

It should only be a few pages back, and Nate responded with all the cars that use the pump you (and I) have

Default there are several posts that (not suprisingly) say the N is for 97's as well

Default Re: Central Locking Pump replacment - '97, '98?

Thanks everyone!

last two questions:

1.How do I program the remote if I only have one?
2.Is $346.04 a good price for a new pump, or should I take my chances going used?

Default hmm do you have a valet key?

If so try that as the other key. I *think* that the car will eventually figure it out that you only have 1 key, and will respond to it if it has been in the ignition for awhile, but I'm not 100% sure.

In terms of question 2, look at it this way, you can have 3 bad chances for the price of 1 new. How do those odds make you feel?

Default Re: hmm do you have a valet key?

I have two keys, one remote. the 97s got the separate key and remote deal...

used vs new... I guess the question is do these parts all eventually fail within a certain time? or do people go years and years without it failing on them?

the newest used pump will be 5 years old... mine is 9. not sure when it started failing, since this is a used car... I'd hate to buy a used pump and have it last me only a year. That said, if most people on here are buying used pumps and having them last a good amount of time, I'd probably go that route.

thanks for being so helpful!

Default my GF has a 2001... I have a 99.5

hers broke, mine has yet to.

I think it is a usage and strain issue. A sticking trunk lock is what I contribute to her pump's failure
