Default Rear differential questions

99.5 A4 Q with 2.8. I have a bad seal on the front of my rear diff....right where the drive shaft attaches. My Bentley doesn't mention a rear differential. It looks like there is a case I could just take right off the differential.

Does that case share the same fluid as the entire diff?

I believe there's some screwy tool to loosen the fill plug. Is it this?

I'm guessing you mean the center diff? Rear diff is not connected to the rear of the trans.
Try searching for "tailshaft seal"

No I mean rear diff. On the front of the rear diff is a case that's bolted on. My bad seal is at the front of that case, right where the drive shaft connects.

The rear differential uses GL-4 or GL-5 specification synthetic lubricant and requires about 1.8 litres on a refill. The fill and drain plugs on the rear differential assembly should be Allen type fasteners.

The 'tamper-proof' drain on the gearbox is an XZN-type 16mm socket similar to the one shown in your link.

The procedure for replacing the differential front seal is in the Bentley shop manual.

I found a DIY for changing fluid in the rear diff. Saw the two allen bolt plugs. I must have been thinking about the gearbox plug.

Yea but it's odd that Bentley never mentions the rear diff. I think I found a technial bulletin on it....that's it. Weird.

The complete procedure is in section 39 Final drive, Differential.

Weird. I was looking under "5 Spd. Manual Transmission 01A All Wheel Drive". Group 39 has no rear differential. I gotta go to group 39 under "6-Spd Manual Transmission 01E". That group shows the final Diff.

My Bentley is on my hard drive...don't know if that makes a difference....

Depending on the version you have; you can go to www.bentleypublishers.com and download the latest version (3.1.0) of eBahn. In that version, the final drive differential unit is listed under both 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmission.

Nope. Look at this. I don't care now, I see where to find it.
