Any insight? Car's stalling all of a sudden
So my car wouldn't start thursday leaving work. I then got a ride home and came back and it started right up. It did stall then, but I figured that I had pumped to much gas in from the starting attempts.
last night I went to drive it and it stalled twice, the second time it didn't start back up. It started about 30 minutes later and I tested revving it a bit. After removing my foot from the gas, RPMs would drop down to 660 for a split second before returning to the normal idle point. It sounds like it would almost stall when RMPs hit 660, but it never did.
There are no warning lights on the dash. I'm thinking maybe its because the spark plugs haven't been changed in a while, but that seems like wishful thinking.
Any ideas as to what I should begin looking at? I do not have a vag-com
Thanks,
Ian

Those are good starting points as they are cheap to service but it shouldn't prevent another start. Your problem sounds a lot like a bad engine speed sensor (cam position sensor). When they start to fail they cause random stalling and no-start conditions which, after time, will allow to start again.
Replacement is easy and the cost is minimal. Without a vagcom you'd be throwing money at the problem but if I was a betting man I'd place a bet on crank position sensor.
You may be looking for one of these "reference sensors" half way down the page.

When I had this issue my car would sometimes stall at stop signs or low speeds and then fail to start up right away. One time I stalled at a stop sign and had to put my car in neutral and roll it off to the side of the road since it wouldn't start. I sat there for about 20 minutes cranking the thing before it started up again.
The next day I got a new MAF sensor and I haven't had a problem since...this happened about a year ago.

I should also add that at stop lights it would idle at very low rpms, around 600, and the engine would shake the car ... especially if the air conditioner was on. I tested turning on the air conditioner at a stop sign and the rpm dipped so low that the engine died.

I have been dealing with the same behavior with my A6. I replaced the MAF sensor, still stalling randomly. Replaced the coolant sensor, still stalling randomly.
Just picked up the crank sensor and going to replace it tonight and hopefully, and it sounds like it will work, I will be running fine again.
