A4 97 quattro automatic transmission oil plug
I need to know how to check the oil level in my 97 A4 Quattro automatic trany. There are 2 plugs on the bottom of the oil pan. one big and one small. Does anyone know which one is for drain and which is to check the oil level? I tried to open both little by little and it seems that oil comes out of both plugs. I appreciate any suggestion
Thank you

Re: Sounds like you may want to let a mechanic look at it instead...

the little one drains the fluid. The big one 17mm hex is used to fill and to....
check the fluid level.
You need to get the fluid up to 35 - 45*C on a level surface and then it should just just trickle out. You have to open the large plug when the car is running, otherwise the fluid will pour out.
If you search you will find links to audipages service on an A8 trans essentially the same procedure.
And our Resident Curmudgeon is right get jack stands -good ones!

ok, if I understand this right, I have to drive the car around then I must keep it in parking gear and keep the engine running while checking the oil level in the tranny opening the big plug right?

Re: No! get a shop manual... driver's side, up high by the left axle... But don't just poke around
Roger, I think is the big plug acording to my research http://www.2carpros.com/forum/1999-audi-a4--change-transmission-oil-vt180183.html. Still was not sure why fluid will come out. I haven't opened it much just a bit and tightened back in with the first drip.
Thanks
