yes, I believe that it's a bad dimmer stalk thinger on your gauges
turn it back and fourth to see if it dims and brightens the lights smoothly.
I've had this problem for over a year. It was frustrating but now I have learned to live with it.
When It started, all the lights just flickered a few times over bumps etc. Now, it is almost always dim. I took the gauges apart and sprayed some compressed air around the stalk and it seemed to work for a week or two. Another time, I used electrical contact cleaner on it and it worked fine for about a month. The part is not replaceable so I'd guess that I need a new cluster to fix it. You may have a different problem but it sounds the same is mine.

2nd that! mine did exactly the same and
I took the cluster apart and sprayed electrical cleaner into the dimmer stalk - then my clock stopped working for 1 day!
I too now live with a a dim display - but I got an electrical engineer to buzz the electrical connections to find out how to run a dedicated set of wires to an indepentant switch in the dash. I just have not had the time to do this yet as my car has been plagued by repairs!
good luck!
