Default 2.8l oil leaks everywhere but no oil light.

I have a 99 2.8l with almost 200k on it.

From what i can tell it has 4 or 5 oil leaks. but the oil
isn't coming on. Does that mean its safe to drive the car?

Check your oil level and make sure it is up to the mark. Your leaks are most likely from the valve covers. Does it smell like burning oil when you drive? Safe to drive as long as you keep it up to the mark.

If you get a oil light stop. Do not proceed. Call the roll-back.

STFA. Most leaks are low pressure. Your only real danger is fire.

Read about the various leaks these engines have and how to remediate them.

i never let it get lower then bottom orange nub on the dip stick.
But it loose 1 or 2 quarts every time drive it. I've read about the
pcv causing oil to leak from a lot of different places like my car.
But i'm not sure how to tell if the pcv is bad.

That's lots of oil to drop on the ground every time you drive it.

If you're not able to do your own work find a good indy shop with Audi knowledge and get it to them for repair.

Well I took it to the shop and apparently I need the upper and lower oil pan gasket, crank shaft seal, crank shaft housing, valve cover gaskets and the breather tubes and jet pumps. He quoted me at over 2000$ to get it fixed. Would it be cheaper to get a new motor or fix the one I have.

I really really doubt it. I would have them replace Cam chain tensioner gaskets, rear cam plugs, and valve cover gaskets, the tubes and jet pump, clean the engine , and drive the car awhile and see what happens and if any leaks return. 95% of 2.8/2.7T oil leaks are the above mentioned, they are high up leaks, and easily look like rear main, oil pan, cam seals, oil cooler leak. Its about 600 on a 2.8 to do the oil leaks, and probably another 150-200 for those breather tubes and what not, they can be pricey.

+1

Start at the top with the recommendation from Prospeeder. I think your mechanic is seeing wet spots because your VCGs etc. are leaking and it drips down.

You need the cam tensioer tool. The cam plugs and valve cover require ordinary tools. If you are in that deep, you should probably do a timing belt water pump, and thermostat. That does require special tools.

Either you need experience with working on audis or cajones.

Good luck, there is no shame in bringing the car to an audi tech, but it will cost you.
