1998 A4 key fob lock problem
i have a 98 A4 1.8 quattro automatic. When I bought the car the only key i was given was the metal part with 1 inch of the fob,the bottom part with no push buttons. the key starts the car and operates the doors and trunk but there are no push buttoms to open the doors. So i bought a new fob online, a 2 button that the car is supposed to have and i cant get it to program correctly. the locksmith that cut the key thought it was strange that his new key started the car without any programing? I've tried different variations of programing with one key in the door and one in the ignition and pushing the lock button etc but nothing happens. The dealer said they have to do it and charge me $100. I bought this car for $1000 and have put $1500 more into it, with brakes, MAF, control arms, tires, and plenty more. Do i have to pay a dealer to get my fob to open the doors??

No, since your car does not have the immobilizer, your newly cut key can start the car.
You can program the remote yourself, just google instructions for "remote programming Audi b5". I've done it successfully on my Allroad.
The trouble is that you will find several different instructions. Try them all.
Essentially, leave the old key in the ignition, turn it on without startin the car.
Close the door. With the new key, turn to lock and while holding in the lock position, press the lock and then the unlock buttons. Take the key out.
However, there are variations, so see what helps. The version that worked for me was UK instructions, from one of the sites in the UK.

Beautiful!!! I had tried 2 other variations before calling the dealer. What worked for me was: the old key in the ignition turm but not started. New key in the driver door and manually turned to lock the car. pushed unlock then lock then unlock again. removed the key and the new key fob works as it should. Thanks so much for your help.

You don't need it for a B5 A4. It's just a key.
