Depends on how much hp you make and how hard you drive . . . I change at 50K intervals.

2nd....and do it yourself. It's VERY easy. There are write-ups for it in Tech. Art.

Default I switched my Racura to Redline MTL at 7500 miles just to clear the wear swarf out.

The diffs are fine with any GL-5 75w/80w-90, Mobil 1 is great for that. The trans takes GL-4 90, and it's more worthwhile to get something special, AMSoil is best in that dept. At 155k, I'd actually do a 1 week run with some cheap gear oil in the trans to flush it out before the AMSoil.

Default A little over stock HP. Daily driver. I could do it myself...just need PB Blaster.....

and the special socket.

I have ramps. Do you need to jack the rear end up and put it on stands for a level fill?

Thanks for the info. Are those fluid ratings/weights are compatible w/2.8L?

Default There is *now* a VW spec, not just a part number. However, the products are all the same, GL-4 __w-90

In a word, yes. JUST like motor oil, there is a lot of fudge room in gear oils. In this case, were not talking about gear oils, but trans oils, thus the GL-4 spec that has less friction modifiers, thus "grabbier" for the syncros. GL-5 like Mobil 1 or cheap gear oil is for gears, but can be used in the trans under some conditions and maybe to flush it out and add a light anti-friction coating to the gears.

140 weight is applicable in some of the diffs. Good for mixing with 90 weight. Diff temps can be checked with an IR thermometer. I suggest doing it before/after changing to compare.

Variables people consider include climate, power output, wear, noise, mpg, shift speed, syncro friction, desired service interval. They are things that exist mostly in the mind of the operator. Just experiment, but definately change it. Redline's web page is pretty informative, but I prefer AMSoil.

Default I would just for peace of mind

I changed mine at 185K (November 2005) just for a peace of mind. No problems at all with transmission. Still with original clutch at 245,000 miles. Some metal shavings but not noticeable but color was a little greyish.

Used manual transmission fluid(Redline MT-90, 3 qt.) and rear diff. fluid(Redline 75W90, 2 qt.). I ordered them off of E-bay relatively inexpensive. I did have to borrow the transmission drain plug socket from a shop.
