Default A3 Vag-com tricks for the 8P.

<center><img src="http://www.ross-tech.com/UwesStoreConcept/hex-com-med.jpg"></center><p>
- Steering aid - confirmed can be done. A3s come with a 6 or 8. The higher the value the more power assist you get, speed is a variable. Factory specs are supposed to be 6 for sport, 8 for base/premium. Some people have gone from 8 to 0 and like it. I went from 8 to 6 and it was good enough for me.

Steering aid explained: More steering assistance is provided when the vehicle is traveling at low speeds / the steering wheel is undergoing larger and faster rotations. Assistance is reduced when traveling at higher speeds / the steering wheel is undergoing smaller movements.

0-10mph, a map is selected by the control module in response to the more rapid turns and larger amount of force placed on the steering wheel.

At 62mph and up, the module will choose to apply little to no steering assistance b/c you would be applying a lighter force to the steering wheel, such as when changing lanes.

The module has room for 16 different maps. VW/Audi has installed 13 maps in the module. Each map is based on the following factors...

-vehicle weight
-vehicle size
-shocks
-springs
-wheels
-tires
-fwd or awd

Many of you may be familiar with the Vag-com tricks available for our A3s. But we have more than a few Noobies (welcome and congrats)in our room so here goes...

You can purchase a program for your laptop from ross-tech.com. It will come with a cable that would plug into your usb or serial port. The other end would plug into your car, just above the dead pedal. You can modify settings/features/options that are computer controlled. The kit would cost you approx. 249-329$ for the average consumer, depending on your vehicle, needs, etc.

Your dealer/service dept or mod-shop may be able to do these 'tricks' to your car. Here are some reasons they would not help you...

a) They aren't allowed (this is sometimes true, ie: seatbelt).
b) My fav. "It's not possible to do that." I have had techs tell me they couldn't do things to my car, that is already done.
c) They can only do one trick per maintenance/warranty visit (dealers have their own specific policy on this).
d) They don't have the information on how to do it. Bring your codes with you.

There are over 11 pages, here are the notables...

- seatbelt alert - confirmed can be done. You can eliminate the warning bell reminding you to put your D or P side belt on.

- xexon range - need to investigate further.

- footwell lights - europe only?

- coming home settings. I have heard you can tell your coming home lights to include your side markers, and/or fogs, and/or xenons, and/or rear fog, etc.

- rear fog(s) - confirmed can be done. All you need is a new switch to activate a rear fog light in the driver side tail light, or both driver and passenger side. You may need this coding as well. I can confirm that it's possible to have both D+P side lights on with U.S. cars (thanks Jim/Len).

- front fog lights. you allow them to stay on with your high beams.

- auto lock automatic above 10mph on/off

- auto unlock after removing key from ignition on/off

- power windows via remote control - confirmed. You can open and close your 4 windows with the lock/unlock button on your remote control. Range is not as far as your typical locking range.

- sunroof opening via remote - there is coding for it! but nobody has figured it out yet.

- sunroof closing via remote - confirmed, this can be done.

- locking confirmation can be customized in many ways. ie: I have my remote blink the lights and beep, when it locks the doors. But have my lights flash and NO beep when I lock with the key (stealth).

- remote control range limitation - need to investigate further.

- interior monitoring - need to investigate further.

- selective locking. remote unlock would unlock just D door, or all. confirmed

I'm sure there are many more tricks that are not listed here, I was scanning the list.

Default My dealer tried to tweak but...

got stuck trying to mod the steering boost (from 8 to 5). Apparently, they got through the required codes, but then came up with a Gen1 or Gen 2 question (what??), and they punted. Any feedback on the correct answer to this VAG-COM question? In the meantime, the techs at the dealer assure me they are trying to get an answer from Audi (or not).

PS - 5K warranty visit. All is well. I have NO issues.

Gen I steering gears were only in early 2004 A3's, which were only sold in Europe. All the ones here have Gen II

They can easily be told apart by looking at the bolts on the pinion cover. Gen II only has 2 bolts.

Default This is the problem

AUDI IS A BUNCH OF MORONS... They have eliminated any means for dealers to actually look stuff up. Everything must be done through guided fault finding. I had a 03, A4 in today that I needed to check an ABS code. I had the code printed out already just wanted to figure out the procedure to go about testing it. Turns out it was something stupid that had changed since I last was at a dealer and regularly workingo n cars and didn't even need to look it up my friend/other tech told me what to do, had he not I would have had to spend half our running guided fault finding instead of 2 minuets checking in the repair manuals.

There is no more information in the repair manuals at dealers. you want to take a seat out its in there.. you want to pull the engine its ni there.. Anything regarding a scan tool just says use guided fault finding. With guided fault finding you can't manual enter ****.. it only gives you limited options. What does this mean you need to find a tech that started in the last 5 years. Ones before that are too **** to figure anything out on their own what Audi tells them is what goes.. mods suck bring back carbs.. Anyone who started in the last 2 years has only ahd guided fault finding and has absolutely no clue how to do anything outside of it.. Anyone between there usually knows how to work the stuff well enough to enter stuff manual and is not yet disgruntle about cars. OR is like me and has their laptop on top of their tool box and anything the dealer scan tool wont let you due is ready with vag com

Sorry I should put in some paragraph breaks but its been a long day.
