Default Sirius Install Problem

Okay, so I finally bought a Sirius tuner for the A3. I purchased part number 8E0 057 593 from an Audi Dealership on e-bay. I installed the unit, connected the CAN cable behind the passenger side kick panel (or whatever it's called), turned the radio to "SAT" and everything worked!!!

I was so excited that the install only took about 4 minutes (although I was worried about the kick panel when I was pulling on it, but it didn't break). Okay, time for the problems...

First thing I noticed was that when I turn the car on, the area that digitally shows the trip odometer and the regular odometer flashes with the number of miles until my scheduled maintenance. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen before unless I pulled the little stick. Also, the readout shows that I have 1300 miles until my scheduled maintenance, but I have something like 3758 miles on the odometer. I thought the readout used to be accurate to the mile, not to the nearest hundred miles.

Okay, so I'm thinking that had something to do with the Sirius install... I go back and pop open the panel that is hiding the sirius module in the back, look closely, and notice that the unit is part number 8E0 035 593 (not 8E0 057 593 like I purchased).

For those of you that are always reading these threads, you may have seen my previous post where I was asking about the difference between the following three part numbers:

8E0 035 593 (8E0-035-593)
8E0 057 593 (8E0-057-593)
8E0 057 593D (8E0-057-593D or 8E0-057-593-D)

(the additional part numbers with "-" are to help the search in the future)

I was initially told by my dealership that the only unit that would work in my new A3 was 8E0 057 593D. They said that 8E0 057 593 would overheat and that 8E0 035 593 just wouldn't work.

I guess what I am looking for is somebody with the technical expertise to tell me what the difference is between these three units. I'm pretty pissed because I could have purchased 8E0 035 593 for half the price. I'm also pissed because it seems to work fine (in the sense that the satellite radio works). Maybe having the wrong part number is screwing with the CAN system?

Finally, maybe I just never noticed that the "miles to service" was being displayed... is everyone seeing this when they start their car?

Thanks in advance for all your help, everybody.

-Scott

P.S. - The dealership I bought the unit from is looking into the situation for me. Apparently, all of the units they have are mislabeled.

Default FWIW, my XM install

I installed the XM tuner in my A3 yesterday, part number 8E0-057-593A; as I do not have navigation. I have no idea what the -035- part number is, all the A3 PN's are -057-. I haven't had any issues with the XM. No service interval blinking or anything like that. It sounds like your issue is directly due to the wrong tuner(the 035??)...the -057-593 should work fine. Unless you have nav, I don't know why they would say to get 593D, it's clearly stated that this is for Nav (and/or TPMS). What data did they use to explain that 593 overheats? That doesn't make sense...

The manual states that the miles until service indicator only updates every 300 miles (if I remember correctly). Mine today was 2951 miles (2100 until service). I don't see miles to service when I start the car, but you are closer to service than I am so maybe it begins at a certain point.

I doubt this is terribly helpful, but best of luck.

Okay, so I just got off the phone with the people who sold me the Sirius unit and I am once again happy. They called Audi directly for an answer...

"The 8E0-057-593 is the exact same part as 8E0-035-593. When Audi started selling the A3, the simply boxed part number 8E0-035-593 and put part number 8E0-057-593 on the box."

As for the "miles to service" indicator... according to the service people at the dealership I was working with (Don Rose Imports), there is an option that can be set as to whether you want the "miles to service" to show when the car is started. I'm guessing that attaching the Sirius unit somehow reset that option?!?!. Who knows... the most important thing is, my wife and I now have satellite radio in our new A3 and it took $300 and 4 minutes of my time.

For those of you interested in getting satellite radio, it looks like part number 8E0-035-593 (or 593A) can be purchased instead of 8E0-057-593 (or 593A) at a considerable savings. I could have purchased the 8E0-035-593 from somebody on ebay for $150 but was told that I had to get the 057 because the 035 wouldn't work. Oh well... Hope others will read this and save a few bucks.

Good luck and thanks for your reply, brashman.

P.S. - no, it wasn't really a serious/sirius problem

Your CAN Gateway should be recoded so that the rest of the car knows that the receiver exists.

Will most dealerships do that for free?

Default Dealer is certainly capable.

How much (if anything) he will charge you is a whole 'nother question.

Of course you could DIY it with VAG-COM, and as well as make a few other improvments (like killing the annoying seat belt warning, getting your windows to open/close with the remote, etc. :-)

If you're in the Philly area, I can do it for you.

Thanks, Uwe... if I were in the area I would certainly stop by. Since I'm on the Cali/Nevada border, I'll have to drive either to Reno or Sacramento.

Thanks again for the help and I'll let you know the outcome.
