thoughts on my 2 emissions results (long and complicated)
18 timing, 93oct
HC 0.5298/.8000 pass
CO 2.4240/15.000 pass
NOx 5.2809/2.000 FAIL
15 timing, 87 oct
HC .7725/.8000 pass
CO 4.9929/15.000
NOx 4.6566/2.000 FAIL
those are the numbers..
now thoughts..
retard timing and 87 oct actually increased my HC numbers and I don't understand why.. also doubled my CO numbers...
signs points to a busted cat or vac leaks, but my cat is 20k old and i just fixed all the vac leaks. idles perfect other than the isv being annoying(old).
seems like i'm running lean, but my a/f ratio hasn't been touched at all since last time and i passed easily.. could my isv effect that too since it controls unregulated air, also when i remove my gas cap the damn thing still dies so the if there is a leak its not a biggie.
my proposed temporary solution is to kick the timing back to 18 using 93oct. that would again lower the CO and HC numbers. then i'll reset the ecu before the test making the mixture more rich thus reducing NOx due to lowering combustion temps.
input anyone?
i'm think that i probably have some hairline vac leaks but i don't think it would make so much difference. so i'm leaning toward a busted cat since the a/f hasn't been touched. perhaps my oil level is always slightly over maximum actually broke the cat. also my high HC number could be the cat too....
oh yeah, vac leak detection, what am i supposed to do with propane.

old post

It's a multimeter with a homemade harness, every CIS-E owner should have one...
Hell I've got a dedicated multimeter DPR setup, $10 digital multimeter, some hacked off plugs, and some wiring. Literally takes 5 minutes to make and is massively helpful with CIS-E setups.

http://www.uvm.edu/~avangerb/Audi/DPRMeter.html</a

Hell a bad coolant sensor can make your car fail emissions, checking the DPR current...
can really help diagnose running issues. I think if you follow the steps I gave you might pass just fine. Highest grade gas, hot engine, leaned out a bit, timing back slightly, higher idle (which isn't readily changed on the CIS-E), and someone at some point mentioned oil changing is good, not sure why, but worth a shot.
Cheers,
