Question about auto tranny in 1990 80.....
I'm looking at a pretty nice 1990 80 3 speed automatic FWD. Runs good, shifts good, but makes a pretty loud noise. No noise in any gear when idling, but when you hit the gas the noise starts. Almost sounds like something hitting or grinding against something in the bellhousing....maybe torque converter? Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yeah, the Audi auto transmissions from that era are notorious for being pieces of crap
If it was the torque converter I imagine that you would hear something anytime the engine is running, it's always spinning, and always turning the pump and input shafts. Maybe its the access cover on the bottom ot the bellhousing. The t/c has cooling fins on it, maybe one of them got damaged, but again, you would hear that whenever the engine is running. I'm on my second trans and looking at number three. Trans shifts great but whines above 35 MPH. The differential is usually the problem, could be as simple as a bearing or the worst case excessive wear on the ring and pinion...expensive any way you look at it. Oh, and I have not been able to find a new ring and pinion anywhere. There is a place that will rebuild your transmission...but plan on not cheap.

German Transaxle of America
