Chicago New Audi Owner A6 w/4.2 V8 (2001) Questions . . .
Hi all,
I just bought a 2001 A6 4.2 with 98K miles, have all records, a good deal of info and looks like the car was well maintained.
Btw - I am a long time Pelican BBS board follower with my 911, and love the board and was referred here by some Pelicanites!
Questions I have:
1. Biggest 4.2 pitfalls to be concerned about?
2. With 100K mile service coming up -- what can a DIY do by myself without having to pay dealer $$?
3. What (if anything) should I have the dealer do??
I've read about "REPLACE THE PLASTIC COOLANT TUBE/O-rings ON RIGHT SIDE OF THE BLOCK" and some issues about the Tiptronic tranny, but would still like more first-time advice.
Also -- Anybody in greater Chicagoland area that I can correspond with - and post some questions to?
Thanks in advance for all replies!

The engine is pretty strong. The only problems I've seen in the shop is the plastic coolant hose and o-rings you mentioned, adjusters, and water pump. With that many miles on it I would get a timing belt service with the tensioners, rollers and thermostat. Also have the small vacuum hoses replaced.

Re: Consensus seems to be get the complete Timing Belt service done
Thanks guys -- I plan to have the timing belt replaced -- right now that's a bit too much DIY for this guy.
