Default what is "high milage" for a Audi 4.2L V8

OK
I am brand new (brand noob) to this
I don't even have an Audi
but I am buying a new car in the coming month(s)
and I am quite keen for it to be an Audi

I am most keen for it to be a A6 4.2 quattro (C5) I think at the moment (altho also have test driven a 2.0T Sportsback A3 and 2.7TT Allroad)

The one I am most interested in has "high milage"

Now, some engines you should steer clear of when buying 2nd hand if they have "high milage" for this discussion I will consider

quite high milage > 70,000 mile
high milage > 100,000 miles
very high milage > 130,000 miles

now, some engines I would (provided they had good service history, were running smoothly and "felt" right) have very high confidence buying even if they had "very high milage". Such engines would include Subaru EJ20, Nissan RB series and BMW 2.8L 6cyl. Other engines, even if the seller had a faultless service history, and no problems to date, I would consider ticking time bombs if they had "quite high milage" and some engines I would just strongly advise to not buy (or hold onto) once they reached "very high milage"

I currently drive a BMW (with that 2.8L engine, and it has about 112,000 miles on it, and still oozes confidence) and am lucky enough to have a good BMW specialist mechanic, but unfortunately this means (and I did check with him) he can not give me any advice on how this (Audi 4.2L V8) engine ages.

if anyone who owns one, or owned one, or services them, or is just generally aware can tell me what they know, and feel and why, that would be very appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Most cars i've owned have almost had 200k on them, the last two were well over that and gave me no problems.

My 4.2 has 160k on it and it's not an issue, the only thing to watch for with newer Audi's is there trans

I have a 4.2L in my 2004 A8L with 116,000 miles and do not hesitate to drive from Las Vegas to Detroit with it. And, it still has the original timing belt.

There is someone on the D3 A8 thread that just posted he has 160,000 or 180,000 miles on his 2004 or 2005.

I look forward to getting 300,000 miles out of mine.

My old '87 Audi 5000CS Quattro with 5 cylinder 2.2 (maybe it was 2.0)L turbo inline 5 cylinder had 286,000 miles when I donated it (running) to a charity motors organization. The base engine was still good. The rest of the car was falling apart. It was 18 years old when I donated it.

I have 130K on my 4.2, changed timing belt tensioners and pullies last year as did Tip 01L tranny flush and change filter fluids.

I expect to get 225 out of mine before I look for something else.

My 2000 4.2 has 167,000 on it and it slams like a steam train. It's had some work done - most of the standard "must change" stuff but it sounds like a beast (RS6 exhaust) and flies like a jet.

HTH

I have a 01 a6 4.2, 112,000 miles currently, got it 4 months ago. So far I've done plugs, maf, replaced almost all vacuum lines, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter, cabin air filter, complete timing belt job with all components due to tensioner starting to fail, and also had to replace both cam adjusters the were failing , new seals, valve cover gaskets, throttle body gasket , next will be coil packs , so in my personal experience this has been a expensive car to maintain, but I absolutely love the car, i do the work myself which helps. If your looking at buying one I would highly recommend finding one that has all previous work records.

You guys need to start your own threads, not hijack this one.

130,000 miles is not high milage for a 4.2. Just make sure the basics have been taken care of (timing belt, pulleys, tensioners, water pump) and it has a full service history.
Its not without its problems (cam chain tensioners, inlet manifold changover flaps), but is generally robust and powerful.
Beware of automatic transmissions though - very common for them to go at that sort of mileage.
