How could this happen? Improperly torqued screw?
Several weeks ago my 2002 A6 displayed a sudden drop in oil pressure. I immediately called AAA and had it flat-bedded to the shop. What they found is described in the series of pictures that follow:

The vehicle has less than 25000 miles on it, has only been serviced by the local Audi dealer, and as far as I know this assembly has never been taken apart (until now). I'm not sure whether to be angry with the dealer, or with Audi. The bill was more than $2300.

Uhh - VAG's QC isn't exactly legendary. Cost cutting takes place on the backs of the suppliers and
by using cheaper labor for assembly. Rare, but not unheard of for an Audi or VW. My car had a drop in oil pressure back at like 15k miles and dealer assured me it was just a bad sensor (this was after a RMS R&R) and after me driving it for several hundred miles and them working on it for like 2 weeks, they finally realized it was a bad oil pump and the oil pressure really was low! You're lucky they caught it right away. That's what the warranty is for - materials or manufacturing defects.

Yeah, you're right ... but then no auto manufacturer has legendary QC, except maybe Toyota and I've read some negative comments about them lately. Probably the bean counters closely calculate how much the marketing budget has to be bumped up to counteract a certain level of bad press, and thus maintain a given reputation. But it all seems so tedious, somehow.

I hope my post didn't come across as being callous to your issue, it stinks to have a brand new car
"rebuilt" to such an extent, but chances are that any such defect will manifest itself during the warranty period. The design and driving experience for Audi's (and most German cars) is great, the QC and reliability are the price you must pay for the dynamic driving experience, unfortunately. If they were great to drive and reliable as hell, everyone would own one and I like the somewhat exclusive nature - the fact that not everyone has one. It's nice to be a bit unique.
