Default 2000 a6 2.8l flex pipe leaking directly in front of the cat converter is that 8 year 80kmiles HELP!!

well i took my car to bell audi in rahway, NJ today. They told me that the catalytic convertors are not covered under the federal mandated 8 year 80,000 mile warranty because it does not cover exhaust leaks, even though to do a proper repair the cat need to be replaced which will cost 1600+ dollars, as its one big expensive piece. They tell me the warranty only covers clogs and catalytic failures.

I think that is BS am i being blown off? i have about 300 miles left before i hit 80k miles. Should i be held responsible for this repair?
Being that the flex pipe and cat convertor are one piece and can not be replaced seperately with out cutting and welding shouldnt it still be covered?

I call riverside audi and they told me the same thing after i explained the situation.

what can i do?

Default i called AoA 1-800-822-2834 Is that the right one? i called 2 times first time lady said

first time i called she told me its not covered, second call i was told that she needs to call the dealer to verify and that they will likely side with what the dealer says. i am going to call again in the morning. But is there anything else i can do. Or do you know of a dealer that will do this repair in NJ without hassle.

I'd read the warranty and the law carefully. It should be covered. Try bringing to another dealer.

Default Re: 2000 a6 2.8l flex pipe leaking

First off, the flex pipes can be either (a) rewelded or (b) replaced (which is what I had done). The labor involved taking off the exhaust/pipe assembly, about 3-4 hours. I'm not sure why those yahoos are telling you that you need new cats when apparently all there is wrong is the flex pipes. These cost 30-40 bucks per side. But they are correct, the flex pipe leak is not covered under that warranty. Unless you find a clever way to clog up the cats before the 80K.

Sounds like they want you to give them an early spring bonus. Can you try another dealership too?

Your third option is to take it to an indy mechanic, like I said about 3 hours of labor. Make sure to get the correct flex pipes so that
the new ones don't whistle when all set and done.
