Default 2.8 Cat Replacement

Just replaced the drivers side cat on my wife's '99 A6 Avant. It was making a horrendous vibrating/growling sound on moderate to heavy acceleration. No MIL light or other indications initially.

After crawling under the car and banging around, found that the left cat when malitised sounded like the honeycomb material had come unwelded.

$700 dealer part bolt on from the manifold back to the double clamp prior to the center muffler. Only difficulty was with the front O2 sensor harness routing. Once that was free, it was a relatively easy job.

Hope this helps somebody.

Default I just ordered both assemblies for my 2.8L from "CT Converters" for $288. each...

4Driver4 recommended them. I'll post a follow-up on how they look and fit.

My local dealership wanted $808/each + $100. core charge each.

http://www.ctconvert.com/</a

A local shop here in Seattle told me they tried a few aftermarket Cats but had problems with throwing codes due to some measuring of efficiency by the computer. So, I pussed out and coughed up the coin for a dealer part.
If your setup works out I'll use that when the other side craps out.
Good luck!

I'm running one of those cats on the wife's ride with no issues.

Default thank you both for posting...

I ordered to magnaflow cats last year (it would fit on a similarly equipped 2.8 passat) for about 100 bucks each (no assembly though). After all that my mechanic did not want to install those (I forgot the real reason why).

I wish I knew about the CT converters. Got any pics of the full assembly?

Thanks man, good to know. I'll definitely use them for my next cat replacement.

I'm noticing now that the new one is installed that a weird sound I was hearing just as the RPMs peaked before shifting at moderate acceleration is gone. I was thinking before that I was in for a tranny issue down the road, but all the time it was the freaking cat.

And if that's not enough, the cruise control is working again after a year of inop.

It's all good.
