Coolant leak near back of valve covers
My '02 A4 Avant (1.8T) has recently developed a slow coolant leak near the firewall. Evidence (White residue) of the leak can be seen on the bell housing but all the hoses appear to be fine. This leak developed after I had the timing belt and intake value actuator repaired. After taking it back to the same shop, they inform me that Audi used a plastic part in the cooling system that warps and this is the problem - They are estimating this at $500+ to repair. Anyone else have knowledge of this part and is it something an average, mechanically inclined individual can tackle?

Probably the coolant flange on the back of the head. Part is about $20 iirc.
If you're doing that, may as well do the coolant temp sensor at the same time for an extra $10. It's a DIY job that's kind of a PITA due to its location, but money talks and $500 is a lot.

Is it a plastic part? Felt like the shop was giving me a nieve customer speel.
You wouldn't by chance know the part numbers would you?

Yes, it's a plastic part that mates to the head. You've got a B6 so I don't have the p/n handy
But if you search for "b6 coolant flange" you might come up with something. I think there's a tech article floating around here or on Audizine.
Look at the tech articles, and then go look at the engine yourself before you start blindly replacing parts. From your description of the location and the part itself, it sounds like the flange though.

It is a B6, and thanks for the stellar help! I'll go hunt the tech archives and see what I can find...in addition to running to my local dealership to get the parts.
