Default valve cover sealing discussion.....

As many of us know, valve covers can be a b!tch to get to seal correctly, even with correct gasket and torque on the bolts.

I was wondering if and of these 2 methods is valid for a pemanate seal on the valve covers.

a) use the gasket with RTV sealant on both sides (sandwich)

b) use just RTV to seal the valve covers.

and while we are on the topic of RTV I have a quesion about it.
When using RTV is it best to apply and tighten part all the way to spec...or....apply and tighten half way to spec, let RTV harden for a hour or so so it is not all "squished" out when you tighten...and then tighten it to spec after it has hardened a bit?

No need. Clean gasket surfaces, proper torque (7 ft lbs), and a little RTV on the corners.
