Recommended oil
Sorry if this has been discussed but I could not find it in search.
What is recommended for the 2.8 engine for synthetic oil? I have a 97 A6Q with 140,000 miles. Daily driver, no track/DE events/mods (except for brake upgraded brake pads/rotors - it's such a tank!).
I see a few posts about what folks are using.
I'd like to use Mobil1 5-50 or 15-50. (I'm cheap and try to use the same oil as for my other car).
What does Audi recommend?
What have people found works?
Thanks.

Thanks...
for the suggestions.
The oil topic always sparks a huge discussion on the Porsche forums (as with oil filters) but I guess it is not such an issue here.

no, VAP isnt here, otherwise it would :-(
but yeah, i just use 06A115521B Audi/VW filter, on VW they are used on 1.8T/2.0 motors (and something else that i cant remember) and its the same as what is actually suggested by Audi for the 2.8 12v motors and 5-40 synthetic oil that's also used in all of the VW motors, which would be the 502 spec oil :-)

I always recommend a synthetic oil, but if you're good about changing it regularly a good conventional oil will work just fine. I sell NEO Synthetic Oil and it's the best stuff around, but even for myself I don't use it in my DD's because it's just too darn expensive. It's the only thing that goes in the rally cars though.
Follow a good schedule and Castrol or Mobil1 will be just fine. I wrote up a discussion on oil's a long time ago. I don't know with the new search engine how easy or hard it would be to locate. But in any event it's out there, or in here?
For the 2.8 12V I'd go with a 5w/40. In my 2.8 30V I use 0w/40 or when I don't happen to have any I'll use 5w/40.

Audi requires the use of a GL-4 spec transmission fluid. Red Line MT-90 works very well. I have been using it for the past 5 years. In a colder climate, you may want to mix MT-90 with the thinner Red Line MTL, or use just MTL. You can call Red Line and ask them for advice.
Finding GL-4 spec transmission fluid can be difficult, because most GL-5 spec fluid is now more common. There used to be an issue with GL-5 spec fluid potentially chemically corroding yellow metal (think brass) parts above a certain transmission temperature. The newest GL-5 spec fluids USUALLY do not cause this kind of corrosion. If in doubt, call the manufacturer, or choose a GL-4 fluid like Red Line MT-90.
PS: Do not drain the transmission before removing the filler plug! ;-)
