injector's cleaned. Head's were also gasket matched when the intake was off for the P&P.
New gaskets, no intake leaks.
Pinging goes away in all other throttle positions, but the 1/2way point is the most common position for driving.
Car runs great otherwise. Plenty of power.
FWIW, my wife's 93 100 also pings a lot.
We use 89 octane.
Oh, new air filters in both.
Are these cars prone to this?

I'm willing to bet it's the gas. Why are you running 89?
You'll get better performance AND mileage with 93 octane, which is what's recommended for these cars.
Are your RF9s gapped properly? I've had better success with the OEM NGKs.
Doesn't seem to be a common problem at all...

JUST put in the AC9s today, was pinging before, still pinging. 89 is mid-grade here in PA.
It is NOT necessary to run high octane (93-94) in the run-of-the mill A6 2.8 12v's IIRC...
I will try it the next tank but jeez, it's just a boring 12v... not my hopped up UrS4

read the "minimum" octane requirement in fuel filler door on both cars. Your car is 10.1:1...
compression ratio and your wifes is 10.3:1 CR. Yours is identical to a Corvette LS1 CR and your wifes has higher CR than the same car. If you'd use mid-grade fuel in the corvette than I suppose those "lowly" 12V's should be fine following the same logic.

hmm. just never thought of the C4s as "high octane only" cars. So I either live w/ the pinging or...
Sell.
Anyone want an A6Q 5spd w/ an UrS4's front end & black sport leather interior?

well, here's another example. That LS1 corvette is 350 cu in/5.737 liters and puts out 305 HP...
350 cu in = 5.737 litres. That means that corvette is making 53.16 HP per litre.
The "lowly" 12V at 2.8 litres and 172HP is putting out 61.43 HP per litre. That's almost 20% more power per litre!
Still think mid range fuel is sufficient?

seriously! I agree but in all fairness it's a great engine. Sure it has it's neurosis but...
don't we all!?! If you're not already doing so try giving your gas money to a name brand, different or major oil company gas station. Try Shell or Sunoco or the "big" names near you known for good fuel. You may be fine with mid-range octanes and just getting it broke off in you at the station you currently trade with. Others do the mid-range thing without incident. You "may" just be getting bad/cheap or watered/down gas. In "this" economy anythings possible and anyone is capable of anything and therefore EVERYONE is suspect! Spread your fuel money around a bit, see what happens. Or try half-n-half blends by using x-percentage mid-range and top off with premium. Hell, there's many ways to skin this cat short of selling out.

LOL, you wanna sell because you need to jump up to the next highest octane?
It's like $5 more a fillup for the good stuff.
You get more performance and the gas burns cleaner reducing maintenance.
Why would this prompt you to want to sell it?
