Engine Sludge Identification Help Please!
I am looking day and night to find the right 2001 A4 Avant and wanted to get some help in making sure I don't get stuck with a sludged up engine. What can I do without taking the engine apart to quickly diagnose engine sludge (pics would be absolutely helpful here as I am totally new to all this).

i'd have a mechanic remove the valve cover....
if there is sludge in the cam galleries then don't buy the car and all you're out is a new valve cover gasket. if there is no sludge then you have taken care of the leaks that an older car will have at the valve cover gasket before you buy it.

the easiest way is to simply remove the oil fill cap and look at the bottom, if you see a bunch of crap on the bottom of the cap, theres a really good chance the engine is a no go. However there are some caps that will have a white cream on it, this is from your normal moisture that gets in the engine. this is ok.
